A certain Oppo had his car ruined on the curb while he slept. He has $3,000 to replace it. Must have manual transmission, air conditioning and four doors. Runabout, some daily, won’t go more than 200 miles from home. What should he buy?

The answer is always W124

85 Camry sedan. Yes, you could get a manual! Then take the other 1500, buy dinner, and save the rest.

That would be my first choice as well, but I’d buy the ‘89-91.

Not a W123? I guess finding a manual would be extremely difficult.

You could even get the all-trac.

2005-ish Focus 5-door hatch. Avoid the SPI engine. You want the Duratec 2.3L, but that might be over budget.

I imagine a good W123 with a manual to be more expensive than a good W124 with a manual. But then again, I might be wrong.

An early 2nd-gen S40. 2005ish. Manual transmissions ones are rare, but don’t seem to change the asking price. I’ve seen a few with under 100,000 miles on CL asking right around $4k so it should be possible to get a decent one for $3k with a little negotiating.
